Bio: I try a lot of things. I like a lot of things. Here’s a list about me: I live a very happy suburban life in San Jose, California with my lovely wife and daughter. I’m somewhat international and I love different cultures and countries. I was born and lived in the UK for about half my life. I was in France for a year and then Santa Clara Valley (aka Silicon Valley), California since the mid 90s. I’ve worked or done business in India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Lots of places in the US, Canada, Brazil, Ireland, the UK, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Russia (indirectly) and more. I love music...all sorts. I can tell you all sorts of weird trivia about rock and pop bands, with a particular focus on the music of the 60s, 70s and 80s. I play guitar, poorly. I also love movies, and similarly can wow you with pointless information about who started in what with whom. I’m a techie geek. I wrote software a long time ago (FORTRAN, Pascal, C & Basic, along with a healthy dose of UNIX scripting and system administration). I taught myself C++ and Java, but never really coded in those languages. More recently I’m goofing around with Javascript. I was never an awesome engineer, but I did have an aptitude for technical management and gravititated to that role. I’m a problem solver. There’s nothing I enjoy more than a gnarly problem that I can sink my teeth into. It could be technical, organizational, a broken remote for the TV, whatever. One of my mottos is “there’s always a solution”. Lately, I’ve developed some strong opinions about engineering culture...how it should be nurtured and controlled. What’s the role of the leader? I’m a sailor. I love sailboats, always have. Mostly cruising, but more racing in the last 15 years or so. I have all sorts of theories about the similarity of running a sailboat race crew and a software development team. I have had and continue to have a lot of hobbies. I learned to fly airplanes, I like photography, old cars, running, bicycling, home improvement, and on and on.
